Wedding Cake FAQs and Local vendors for brides

The wedding cake is the centerpiece your reception, so it should stand out and match the theme of your special day.  After all, an important photo on any wedding day will be the bride and groom cutting their cake.  It is a huge part of the celebration and many brides, and guests, will remember a great cake for a long time!

Will I save money by ordering a fake “dummy” decorated cake and serving sheet cakes to the guests?  No, it takes time and ingredients to frost and decorate a fake cake, so you are essentially paying extra for inedible cake.  While we can use dummy cakes to add extra tiers and size to your cake if you want a grand look but fewer servings, it will still be added to the cost of the cake.

Can I choose more than one flavor? Yes, you can choose more than one flavor of cake at no additional cost.  However, keep in mind that some guests may want to sample the other flavors so you should consider ordering additional servings.

Can you provide cupcakes for a wedding reception? Absolutely, if you choose to have cupcakes at your reception we can accommodate that.  Cupcakes are becoming a popular alternative to cake.  Many times the bride and groom cut a small cake and guests are served cupcakes.  You may want to consider the venue and style of your wedding, eating cupcakes may be out of place at a formal wedding, but perfect for a more casual and laid back reception.  Just like with ordering additional flavors, some guests may help themselves to more than one cupcake, so it is helpful to order additional servings.  They can be dressed up with special toppers, ribbons, flowers, or liners and displayed many different ways.  Due to the time involved in decorating individual cupcakes they should not be looked at as a cheaper alternative to cake.

How much will the cake cost? Prices are based on the size of the cake and the predetermined number of servings for each size.  In order to accommodate as many brides as possible, we have set prices for basic cakes and designs, and price per serving will increase with the addition of special flavors and fillings, fondant accents and flowers, or complicated and time consuming designs.  Once a final decision has been made on your cake, you will be given a confirmed price.

How many servings do I need? Order as many servings as you will have guests; it is not fair to the guests to run out of cake before everyone is served a slice. Each cake size serves a predetermined amount of people and you will be given different options to choose according to how you want your cake to look and how many servings you would like to order.  If you need 75 servings but want 6, 8, and 12 inch round tiers, that cake will serve 81 and you will be charged for 81 servings.  If you plan on keeping the top tier for your first anniversary, make sure you order the correct amount of servings excluding the top tier.

How is the cake served?  You can request that you be given a cutting guide along with your cake.  Make sure that whoever is designated to cut the cake follows this guide. It is a good idea to cut the cake as soon as possible, instead of waiting until the end of the reception, so that your guests do not leave before it is served, leaving you with too many leftovers.  Also, if it is cut and plated it should be served immediately.  Your cake will be delicious and moist, but a cut piece of cake will dry out if left uneaten.

Can you provide a groom’s cake?  We do all types of cakes, so we would love to make a groom’s cake for you as well.  While it is certainly optional; the groom’s cake  is traditionally served at the rehearsal dinner or alongside the wedding cake as a flavor alternative.  It can be a fun cake that depicts the grooms interests or hobbies, or it can be a flavor special to him like cheesecake or all chocolate cake.  The possibilities are endless.   Sweet Art Cakes will work with you to make the grooms cake just as spectacular as the wedding cake.

Do you offer tastings?  A tasting consultation can be scheduled so that you can sample flavors, fillings, and get some ideas on what Sweet Art Cakes can do for your special cake.  Because the cake will be prepared especially for you at the tasting, there will be a fee and a limit of 3 cake flavors to sample.  Please call or email to set up a consultation appointment.  Tastings are offered for cakes that serve over 100.

Do you offer custom designs?  Of course!  Your wedding is all about your taste and personality, so the cake should reflect that.  While we can recreate a cake photo or design that you find, it will most likely not be an exact copy of another baker’s cake.  We will work with you to design and create the cake you want.

Do you provide cake stands and delivery?  Yes.  For a fee, we will deliver and set up your cake.  Delivery is not required, but highly recommended as it is very difficult to safely transport a large cake.  If the cake is picked up, Sweet Art Cakes is not responsible for the cake once it leaves our possession.  Cakes come with a sturdy cake board; however a cake stand or pedestal is available for more dramatic presentation.  There will be an additional charge for the cake stand rental as well as a required deposit to cover lost or damage equipment.  We can discuss the cost of rental and delivery when we provide you with a consultation and quote.  Typically, we will not set up other decorations and flowers on the cake table, but this too can be discussed during your consultation.

Can I have fresh flowers on my cake?  Due to pesticides and chemicals, some fresh flowers are not safe to be placed directly onto the cake.  Putting fresh flowers on the cake is not out of the question, though, with special toppers and ways of arranging the flowers to ensure safe contact with the cake. We can work with you and your florist to make sure that your cake is safe and beautiful.

When will my cake be baked?  Your cake will be baked the week of the wedding, typically 3 days in advance depending on the complexity of the design.  Any baker that tells a bride that a wedding cake can be baked and decorated in one or two days is not being realistic, the process is just too time consuming.  So do not worry about when it is baked.  Because taste is just as important as the look, Sweet Art Cakes guarantees you will receive a fresh, flavorful cake on your wedding day!

We love seeing our cakes in the venue and all of the wonderful details in each event.  Thank you to these great sites for including our cake in their feature of these beautiful weddings!
